Because of the heavy strain placed on their bodies, and their constantly pushing themselves to the limit, it is very common for a wide variety of injuries to occur while playing sports. Orthopedic sports medicine is involved directly with treating these sorts of injuries and trauma.

Sports orthopedic surgeons are specially trained to deal with the kind of damage to the musculoskeletal system caused during sports accidents. These are different than typical problems that occur from diseases, infection or congenital conditions, which are dealt with by an orthopedic surgeon.

Orthopedic medicine covers a wide range of different areas of the body, which is why there is a lot of specialization in the field. In order for a foot and ankle surgery to be as effective as possible, it's important that a doctor with a lot of experience perform the surgery. This is true with any type of surgery, as well as evaluations and diagnosis. If a doctor knows there is a problem but is not trained in the specific problem he refers his patient to the best man (or woman) for the job, who has specific training and experience in that area.

Orthopedic medicine is an important discipline among medical professions.
