Hand Orthopedic Conditions

Our hands are undoubtedly one of the most important part of our bodies. We use our hands for virtually every single activity that we do. Even when we are stationary, we use our hands to hold a book, grip the steering wheel or scratch an itch. Trying to function without our hands would make life extremely difficult and certainly keep us from doing most of the things that bring us pleasure or keep our lives functioning normally.

When hand pain begins, it can become very uncomfortable to go about daily activities. This means a complete alteration in your life. Either you are unable to function at a normal level, or if you are able to, doing so brings you pain, and it is hard to focus on anything else.

There are many things that may cause hand orthopedic problems. Some of these are hereditary, some come from misuse or overuse of the hands, and some are a result of injury to the hands. In any case, a hand orthopedic physician is equipped with the knowledge and training required to best deal with the problem.

An extremely common condition that affects the hands is arthritis of the hand. This is an inflammation of the wrist and finger joints. This condition can cause a lot of pain when using the hands, and makes it difficult to function normally. Arthritis can be treated with rest, medication.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is when pressure on the median joint in the hand causes numbness and tingling in the hand. There are a few treatments, mostly conservative, which include wearing a wrist brace and exercises that warm up the wrist bone.

Tendonitis is another common condition of the hand. It occurs when the sheath surrounding the thumb tendons are swollen and inflamed. A related condition is called trigger finger which is when the inflammation and swelling causes the tendon to catch and suddenly release, with a quick action.

Cysts can also form in the hands. Ganglion cysts are fluid filled lumps that result from the inflammation of joint linings or sheaths of the tendons. These cysts are non cancerous and can be removed surgically, or by a non invasive procedure.

Having hands that function properly is very important to everyone. When people encounter these conditions in their hands, it becomes a priority to have something done about it, in order for the person to be able to continue with their life.

A hand orthopedic physician or surgeon is the specialist that can deal with any problems or injuries that may occur to the hand, including sprains and breaks. With their training, you can be assured that they have dealt with hands and all the problems that can occur with them, sufficiently to solve any type of problem.
