Various Orthopedic Appliances, Or Orthotics
Orthopedics is involved in any type of condition or problem that occurs within the musculoskeletal system. This means that when most anything goes wrong with the moving parts of your body, orthopedics is the branch of medicine that deals with it.
After a physician makes an evaluation about the condition, he then must decide on a course of action. There are various treatments that might be available for every imaginable injury or condition. These might include massage, exercises, and in some cases, surgery. Another thing that can help with orthopedic recovery is the use of orthopedic appliances.
Orthopedic appliances are devices that are made to help or support weak joints to work more effectively and aid in movement. They are used to help prevent injury to joints, or support already injured joints, help prevent abnormal spine curvature from worsening, correct and support deformed or weak limbs, and hold the neck in a position that it can heal in.
Another name for orthopedic appliances is orthotics. Examples of some orthotics are splints, braces, collars, corsets, and shoe inserts or special orthopedic shoes. Each of these items has for its purpose to support the joint, bones or muscles that have been damaged or injured to help them heal correctly.
Splints come in a few different types. There are static rest splints that can be worn at night, or other times when the joint should not move. During the day, a static work splint allows for a small range of movement. A dynamic splint has moving parts which may be made of metal, gas, elastic or can even be electrical. Some splints are pre-fabricated rather than being made to fit an individual.
Braces can be used to support the neck and the back. There are also braces for the legs, which help to decrease the amount of weight put on them, while improving their stability.
There are a number of foot problems that can be solved or at least alleviated with the use of orthotics made for the shoes. Heel flares, cups, wedges, and different types and sizes of pads or cushions can be inserted in the shoe to help alleviate discomfort in orthopedic foot problems.
A physician can decide what orthopedic appliance should be prescribed in a given case. An orthotist designs and fits the orthotic, and a physical therapist can demonstrate who it is to be used.
It is sometimes difficult for people to wear their orthopedic appliances because they are uncomfortable or unwieldy and bulky. Unfortunately this is sometimes the cost of returning to your health. It is important the orthotics are worn as prescribed to keep the problem from recurring, or even worsening, possibly becoming irreversible.
