Causes, Types, And Treatments For Orthopedic Injuries
Everyone has been injured multiple time in their life. As a child, injuries are commonplace, and those who are active in sports or those getting on in age know that injuring yourself is just something that happens. There are a huge variety of accidents that may happen, causing damage to your body. This is just a part of life.
Orthopedics is the branch of medicine that is involved with the musculoskeletal system. This means that orthopedics is what covers any condition, trauma irregularity or injury to the muscles, bones, joints or connective tissue.
Because most of the injuries that we sustain happen on our limbs, most of these are classified as orthopedic injuries. Some of the most common orthopedic injuries are broken or fractured bones and sprains or strains. Sprains occur when a ligament is stretched or torn, while a sprain is the stretching or tearing of a muscle or tendon.
Injuries can be sustained during almost any activity. In most sports, there is a great deal or running, jumping and often physical contact with balls or other players. Any of these activities can cause falls or other accidents that cause injuries. Broken bones, dislocations, sprains, and many other orthopedic injuries can result.
However, you don't have to be an active person to be injured! Of course there are many other types of accidents that can cause orthopedic injuries. Car accidents, tripping or falling, and many other unexpected events can lead to many different types of injuries, so everyone is at risk for being injured.
Treatment for orthopedic injuries is as varied as are the injuries themselves. Some treatments are very mild, and can mostly be performed in a doctor's office or even by the patient at home. Others are more severe and require a lot of recovery time.
With some injuries such as shoulder and knee dislocations or sprains and strains, the well known method of RICE is recommended. RICE stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. The combination of these actions can help lead to recovery of the injured joint, bone or muscle.
Other injuries require doctor's attention. Sometimes a chiropractor is needed to help reset bones in the spine or others. Massage is also a tool that is used to help alleviate pain and help the body to heal. Acupuncture is sometimes used as a method of treatment as well.
Of course not all injuries can be treated with these conservative means. A severe or multiple bone fracture will most likely require surgery to repair the break with the use of orthopedic tools. A bad hip may need to be completely replaces, and after a serious knee injury, a knee may also need replacing.
After injuries are sustained, and sometimes after operation on an injury, orthopedic rehabilitation is sometimes in order. This therapy helps restore the joint to it's full range of motion.
For every type of orthopedic injury, there is a physician capable of diagnosing and prescribing the proper course of action. With technology what it is today, there are very few injuries that cannot be fixed by the medical community.
