Dealing With Orthopedic Trauma

Trauma is defined as “a serious injury or shock to the body as from violence or an accident”. Generally this type of injury or event causes great distress and disruption, sometimes leading to lasting damage to the psychological development of a person.

There are many different situations that can cause trauma to an individual. There is, of course the type that is mostly psychological, after seeing or hearing something extremely disturbing. This type of trauma can be very harmful, and should be treated professionally. There is also the type of trauma that is physical.

Physical trauma can come from many different causes. Any type of accident can cause serious injury. Experiencing that type of shock that is combined with the pain and fear that accompany it can have a lasting negative effect. This type of trauma also requires psychological therapy, but, of course, there is the injury to take care of as well.

Because of the violent and unexpected nature of accidents, the injuries that occur because of them can be severe. From broken bones to sprains and dislocations, this is called orthopedic trauma, as it involves the damage to muscle and bone, and orthopedics is involved with conditions of the musculoskeletal system.

Orthopedic trauma requires a well trained person to treat the injuries. An orthopedic physician can assess and evaluate the injury and determine what needs to be done about it. There are specialized orthopedic doctors that will get involved in specific cases. Some of the subspecialties in orthopedics are knee, foot and ankle, hand and wrist, shoulder and elbow, neck and back, and many others. There is also a specialization in joint reconstruction.

For treating and evaluating conditions, a general orthopedic physician is the man for the job, but once a specific need is recognized, referral to a specialist is the next step. The specialist will have extensive knowledge and experience in the very body part that has been affected by the trauma.

In order to become a specialist in a certain area, there is additional training. Every orthopedic doctor attends school for four years of undergraduate studies, and then four years of medical school. After this residency lasts five years, one of general surgery and four with orthopedic medicine. In order to go on to become a specialist, there is an extra year or two spent in the specific field. This includes practicing, treating and operating but also has an element of research, so it's like going back to school in some respects.

The extra work that goes into specialty training qualifies the orthopedic physician to practice in his specific field and be prepared to deal with orthopedic trauma. This type of doctor is equipped to handle injuries of all kinds, all levels of severity and through various treatments, surgeries, and therapies help the patient return to the highest level of health possible.
