The Role Of A Pediatric Orthopedic Doctor

The term “orthopaedics” was first used by Nicholas Andy. It is derived from the Greek word “orthos”, meaning correct or straight, and “paideia” meaning child rearing. He published a book entitled Orthopaedia: or the Art of Correcting and Preventing Deformities in Children. Thus we see that from the very first use of the term orthopedics, there was a reference to pediatric orthopedics.

The purpose of Andy's book was to discuss how the study of orthopedics can have a positive impact on children's health, growth and development. This, of course, is true today as well, when the term orthopedics has been broadened to include the musculoskeletal issues of people of all ages. Pediatric orthopedics is just one subspecialty in orthopedics.

There are many childhood illnesses, conditions and diseases that affect their muscular and skeletal systems. After birth, a child is checked for any problems that are apparent or might be hereditary. A pediatric orthopedic physician then devises a treatment plan for the child's condition.

Some of the conditions that are common among newborns include clubfoot, birth injuries, such as fracture of the clavicle, joint infections and hip dyspalsia. All of these conditions are treatable and can usually be fixed permentantly. Of course, the sooner the diagnosis, the earlier the treatment can begin and the better the chances for a successful solution to the problem.

Some of the childhood health problems that are cared for under pediatric orthopedics are birth defects, postural deformities, trauma, walking disorders, genetic anomalies, neurologic dysfunction and others. Many, if not all of these conditions begin in childhood, sometimes at birth, and, without treatment become significantly worse on into adulthood. However, with the proper treatment, many of these problems can be completely reversed.

Because some of the problems take a great deal of time, or might recur with time, a pediatric orthopedic doctor sometimes works with children all the way through their childhood and right up to adulthood. This is in such cases and when multiple surgeries and therapies are required and the child must be monitored over a long period of time to watch their progress.

We live in a wonderful time when medicine is able to improve so many people's lives. Constant research and improved techniques and technology make it possible for surgeries and treatments to repair conditions that, in the past have been considered irreversible. Today, however, most anything is possible.

Pediatric orthopedics is a very important branch of medicine for children. It is this discipline that ensures that newborn's birth defects and injuries are treated in the best possible way. It helps children to develop correctly, saving them the trouble that many adults have, and opening the way for them to a normal, healthy, long life.
